Our city has a fantastic nightlife – but did you know how much work goes into making sure that people can enjoy it safely and trouble-free?
Last month, I saw this for myself when I joined police officers based at Southampton Central police station for a busy Friday night shift in the city centre. Over the course of a couple of hours, I saw firsthand the work that police do to keep visitors safe during one of the busiest times for the city’s nightlife.
I spent time on foot and in the patrol van, meeting with police and community volunteers who work through the night to help keep revellers in the city safe and deter antisocial behaviour. Some of you may know that this is part of a major operation called ‘Operation Defender’ which involves police, venue security, GO! Southampton, Southampton City Council and other community volunteers.
It was really impressive to see how much hard work goes into making sure that people can enjoy nights-out in the city safely and trouble- free. I’m really grateful to police for taking me round and for everything they and others do to keep us safe on our evenings out.
